e46 m3 diyParts & Tools:Step1:
- remove mass air flow sensor connector by squeezing clips and pulling strait back
- unscrew the hose connecting the air muffler to the intake elbow
- pull the 2 clips on the intake muffler and remove the box
- remove old filter and replace with new filter
- when re-installing the intake muffler it can be tricky getting the tabs into position. I insert the muffler into the intake elbow first making it a bit easier
- aftermarket drop in filters are easier to install as most do not have the thick foam seal the oem filter has

K&N Drop in filterFilter- $45 pep boysK&N recharge kit- $13 pep boysTo clean your K&N filter or to remove oil to run a dry filter- using the cleaner, saturate the front and back of the filter
- if your filter is dirty, let it soak for about 7 minutes in the shade. do not let the cleaner dry
- if removing oil from a new filter 3 minutes is long enough
- use slow running water to rinse the filter
- if the filter is dirty, run the water from top to bottom to avoid pushing the dirt into the clean side of the filter
- allow the filter to dry completely. re-apply oil after the filter is dry if desired
